“Come unto Me!” it is the Saviour’s voice,
The Lord of life, who bids thy heart rejoice!
O weary soul, with heavy cares oppressed,
Come unto Him, and He will give thee rest!
Weary with life’s long struggle, full of pain,
O doubting soul, thy Saviour calls again!
Thy doubts shall vanish, and thy sorrows cease,
Come unto Him, and He will give thee peace!
O dying man, with guilt and sin dismayed,
With conscience wakened, of thy God afraid!
Turn from thy fears! O end the anxious strife,
Come unto Him, and He will give thee life!
Rest, peace and life, sweet flowers of deathless bloom,
The Saviour giveth not beyond the tomb,
But here and now, on earth, first fruits are giv’n
Of joys which wait beyond the gates of heav’n!

“Come unto me and I will give you rest” ( 237 )
“Come unto Me and I will give you rest:”
What blessed words to weary ones address’d!
They come from Him who knew the depth of woe,
And felt for sinners as none here below.
“Come unto Me;” yes, come in all your sin!
Through Jesu’s blood the vile may enter in,
May come to God, by perfect grace thus led,
Assured that for themselves that blood was shed.
“Come unto Me;” the blessed Son of God
Thus told on earth, in ev’ry step He trod,
The heart of Him who is in nature love,
And is beseeching men that love to prove.
“Come unto Me;” yes, God Himself says “Come!”
He sees afar and runs to welcome home
Unworthy sinners who have nought to plead
But God’s own love and their exceeding need.
“Come unto Me;” oh, blessed open door
For those who but for Christ had hoped no more!
Oh, love of God told out in full extent,
When Jesus to those depths of darkness went!
Behold the Christ, a man in glory now ( 240 )
Behold the Christ, a Man in glory now!
The “Man of Sorrows” was He for our sake:
A crown of thorns we put upon His brow,
And with our scorn His tender heart did break.
Yet hear Him! hearken to His loving voice,
Pleading His tears, His agonies, His blood!
Crying, “Ye dying sons of men, rejoice:
I am the Truth, the Life, the Way to God!
“Come unto Me, ye weary ones, for rest!
Ye hungry, thirsty, helpless, come to Me!
There is a home of safety on My breast
Peace in the blood I shed on Calvary!
“Come unto Me: your souls shall then be fed!
Come unto Me: all other springs are dry!
Come unto Me, the living, heav’nly Bread!
Come unto Me for streams that satisfy!”
Praise ye the Father! praise our God most holy (9)
Praise ye the Father! praise our God most holy,
Who cheers the contrite-girds with strength the weak!
Praise Him who doth with glory crown the lowly,
And wish salivation beautify the meek!
Praise ye the Father! for His loving kindness,
And all the tender mercies He hath shown!
Praise Him who pardons all our sin and blindness,
And calls us sons, and takes us for His own!
Praise ye the Father-Source of all our blessing,
Before whose gifts earth’s richest boons wax dim!
Resting in Him, His peace and joy possessing,
All things are ours, for we have all in Him!
Praise ye the Father! praise ye Him who gave us,
In full and perfect love, His only Son!
Praise ye the Christ, who died Himself to save us!
Praise Father, Son, and Spirit-Three in One!
Abide with me:fast falls the eventide (121)
Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide!
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me!
Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away:
Change and decay in all round I see;
O Thou, who changest not, abide with me!
I need Thy presence every passing hour:
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me!
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless:
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? where, grave thy victory?
I triumph still-Thou wilt abide with me!
Abide in Thee! in that deep love of Thine (120)
Abide in Thee! in that deep love of Thine,
My Jesus, Lord, Thou Lamb of God divine,
Down, closely down, as living branch with tree,
I would abide, my Lord, my Christ, in Thee.
Abide in Thee! my Saviour God, I know
How love of Thine so vast in me may flow,
My empty vessel, running o’er with joy,
Must overflow to Thee, without alloy.
Abide in Thee! nor doubt, nor self, nor sin,
Can e’er prevail with Thy blest life within;
Joined to Thyself, communing deep, my soul
Knows nought besides its motions to control.
Abide in Thee! ’tis thus I only know
The secrets of Thy mind e’en while below-
All joy and peace, and knowledge of Thy word,
All power and fruit, and service for the Lord.
I lift my heart to Thee, Saviour divine! (117)
I lift my heart to Thee, Saviour divine!
For Thou art all to me and I am Thine.
Is there on earth a closer bond than this,
That "my Beloved’s mine, and I am His!"
To Thee, once bleeding Lamb, I all things owe,
All that I have, and am, and all I know!
All that I have is now no longer mine,
And I am not mine own: Lord, I am Thine!
How can I, Lord, with hold life’s brightest hour
From Thee, or gathered gold, or any power?
Why should I keep one precious thing from Thee,
When Thou hast given Thyself, Thy life for me?
I pray Thee, Saviour, keep me in Thy love,
Till Thou shalt come, or sleep shall me remove
To that fair realm where sin and sorrow o’er,
Thou and Thine own are one for evermore!
And is it so-I shall be like Thy Son? (108)
And is it so-I shall be like Thy Son?
Is this the grace which He for me has won?
Father of glory, (thought beyond all thought!)
In glory, to His own blest likeness brought!
Oh, Jesus, Lord, who loved me like to Thee?
Fruit of Thy work, with Thee, too, there to see
Thy glory, Lord, while endless ages roll.
Myself the prize and travail of Thy soul.
Yet it must be: Thy love had not its rest
Were Thy redeemed not with Thee fully blest,
That love that gives not as the world, but shares
All it possesses with its loved coheirs.
Nor I alone; Thy loved ones, all complete
In glory, round Thee there with joy shall meet-
All like Thee, for Thy glory like Thee, Lord,
Object supreme of all, by all adored.
I journey through a desert, drear and wild (156)
I journey through a desert, drear and wild,
Yet is my heart by such sweet thoughts beguiled-
Of Him on Whom I lean, my Strength, my Stay-
I can forget the sorrows of the way.
Thoughts of His sojourn in this vale of tears-
The tale of love unfolded in those years
Of sinless suffering and of patient grace-
I love again, and yet again, to trace!
Thoughts of His glory! on the Cross I gaze,
And there behold its sad yet healing rays-
Beacon of hope which, lifted up on high,
Illumes with heavenly light the tear-dimmed eye!
Thoughts of His coming! for that joyful day
In patient hope I watch and wait and pray:
The dawn draws nigh! the midnight shadows flee!
O what a sunrise will that Advent be!
Thus while I journey on my Lord to meet,
My thoughts and meditations are so sweet-
Of Him on Whom I lean, my Strength, my Stay-
I can forget the sorrows of the way.
O what a Savior is Jesus the Lord! (222)
O what a Savior is Jesus the Lord!
Well may His name by His saints be adored!
He has redeemed them from hell by His blood,
Saved them forever, and brought them to God.
Now from the glory He waits to impart
Peace to the conscience, and joy to the heart
Waits to be gracious, to pardon and heal
All who their sin and their wretchedness feel.
Thousands have fled to His spear pierced side,
Welcomed they all have been none are denied;
Weary and laden, they all have been blest;
Joyfully now in the Saviour they rest.
Called from above, a heavenly race by birth (376)
Called from above, a heavenly race by birth,
Who once were but the toiling slaves of earth,
Now pilgrims here, we seek a heavenly home,
Our portion in the ages yet to come!
There all the saints of every clime shall meet,
There each, with all, shall all the ransomed greet:
But oh! the height of bliss, O Lord, shall be
To owe it all, to share it all, with Thee!
That precious stream of water and of blood,
Which from Thy pierced side so freely flowed,
Has put away our sins of scarlet dye,
Washed us from every stain, and brought us night!
Lord, not a step of all the desert road,
No pain, no sorrow, not one heavy load,
But Thou with us dost sweetly sympathize-
Share all, with tender heart and pitying eyes!
Here we are strangers! Lord we do not crave
A home on earth, which gave Thee but a grave!
Thy cross has severed ties which bound us here:
Thyself our Treasure, in a brighter sphere!
Oh what will be that day, when nought grows old- (373)
Oh what will be that day, when nought grows old-
No dying eyes, no form lifeless and cold!
When time is not, nor age, nor slow decay-
Tears, sighing, pain and death, all fled away!
Oh what will be that day, when left below
Our journey, long and sad! when we shall know
His love who drew us on-how, from afar,
O’er that dark sea was Christ our Guiding Star!
O Lord, bring forth that day, when yields the sod
Its dead in Christ, awake-risen sons of God!
When we with them, all changed, to Thee ascend-
When our long pilgrimage shall sweetly end!
O Lord, bring forth that day, when we shall hear,
"Come, all ye blessed, come!" Voice sweet and clear!
When these, our eyes, shall see Thee in Thy grace-
Thy Form of love, adored, Thy once-marred Face!
Singing for Jesus, our Saviour and King (365)
Singing for Jesus, our Saviour and King,
Singing for Jesus, the Lord whom we love,
Heart adoration we joyously bring,
Longing to praise as they praise Him above!
Singing for Jesus, and trying to win
Many to love Him, and join in the song-
Calling the weary and wandering in,
Rolling the chorus of gladness along!
Singing for Jesus! O singing with joy!
Thus will we praise Him and tell out His love,
Till He shall call us to brighter employ-
Singing for Jesus for ever above!
