The cross of Christ what untold love,
What grace was there express’d!
The only way to heav’n above,
To God’s eternal rest.
Once lost but now believing ones
Find mercy on the spot;
For thus God’s message runs:
“To him that worketh not.”
The work of Christ was so complete,
His glory naught can dim;
The place where God and sinners meet
Is only found in Him.
Heed not the poor heart’s questionings;
Let frames and feelings cease;
‘Tis faith in Christ alone which brings
Eternal life and peace.

Majestic sweetness sits enthroned (81)
Majestic sweetness sits enthroned
Upon the Saviour’s brow;
His head with radiant glories crowned,
His lips with grace o’er flow.
No mortal can with Him compare
Among the sons of men;
Fairer is He than all the fair,
That fill the heavenly train.
He saw me plunged in deep distress,
And flew to my relief;
For me He bore the shameful cross,
And carried all my grief.
To Him I owe my life and breath,
And all the joys I have;
He makes me triumph over death,
And saves me from the grave.
To heaven, the place of His abode,
He brings my weary feet,
Shows me the glories of my God,
And makes my joy complete.
Come, let us join our songs of praise (167)
Come, let us join our songs of praise
To our ascended Priest!
He entered heaven with all our names
Engraven on His breast.
Below He purged our guilt away,
By His atoning blood:
Now He appears before the throne,
And pleads our cause with God.
Still Son of Man above, He knows
The weakness of our frame,
And how to shield us from the foes
Whom He Himself overcame.
Nor time, nor distance, o’er shall quench
The fervor of His love:
For us he died, our Ransom here-
For us He lives above.
Light of the lonely pilgrim’s heart (385)
Light of the lonely pilgrim’s heart,
Star of the coming day,
Arise, and with Thy morning beams,
Chase all our griefs away!
Jesus, Thy fair creation groans-
The air, the earth, the sea-
In unison with all our hearts,
And calls aloud for Thee!
Come blessed Lord, let every shore
And answering island sing
The praises of Thy royal name,
And own Thee as their King!
Thine was the cross, with all its fruits
Of grace and peace divine;
Be Thine the crown of glory now,
The palm of victory Thine!
When all Thy mercies, O my God! (2)
When all Thy mercies, O my God!
My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view,
I’m lost In wonder, love, and praise.
Ten thousand thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart,
That tastes those gifts with joy.
Through every period of my life
Thy goodness I’ll pursue;
And in eternal glory bright
The precious theme renew.
Through all eternity, to Thee
A joyful song I’ll raise:
But oh! eternity’s too short
To utter all Thy praise!
I’ve found the pearl of greatest price:(80)
I’ve found the pearl of greatest price:
My heart doth sing for joy!
And sing I must, for Christ is mine-
Christ shall my song employ!
Christ is my peace: He died for me,
For me He gave His blood;
He as my wondrous Sacrifice
Offered Himself to God.
Christ is my Prophet, Priest and King:
My Prophet full of light,
My great High Priest before the throne,
My King of grace and might!
Christ Jesus is my All in all,
My comfort and my love,
My life below, and He shall be
My joy and crown above!
Sweet to look back, and see my name (164)
Sweet to look back, and see my name
In life’s fair book set down!
Sweet to look forward, and behold
Eternal joys my own!
Sweet to reflect how grace divine
My sins on Jesus laid!
Sweet to remember how His blood
My debt of suffering paid!
Sweet to look upward to the place
Where Jesus pleads above!
Sweet to behold Him, and attend
The whispers of His love!
Sweet on His faithfulness to rest,
Whose love can never end!
Sweet on His covenant of grace
For all things to depend!
Sweet, in the confidence of faith,
To trust His firm decrees!
Sweet to lie passive in His hands,
And know no will but His!
Jesus, our Lord, Thou Morning Star (383)
Jesus, our Lord, Thou Morning Star,
How well we know Thy name!
Jesus, the Lord, the Crucified-
In glory still the same.
Jesus, the One who left the throne,
To save a ruined race,
Thy love and lowliness still shine
Upon that glorious face.
Jesus, the One who trod the earth,
The lowly, subject One;
Obedience unto death was Thine-
God’s well-beloved Son!
Jesus, what memories thrill our hearts
Of Thy blest footprints here,
While now to heaven our eyes we turn
And gaze upon Thee there!
Jesus, our Saviour, quickly come,
That we may with Thee be!
Heaven’s morning breaks and glory dawns
When Thy blest face we see.
O God, how wide Thy glory shines! (3)
O God, how wide Thy glory shines!
How high Thy wonders rise!
Known through the earth by thousand signs,
By thousands through the skies.
Those mighty orbs proclaim Thy power;
Their motions speak Thy skill;
And on the wings of every hour
We read Thy patience still.
But when we view Thy strange design
To save rebellious worm,
Where vengeance and compassion join
In their divinest forms:
Here Thy bright character is known,
Nor dare a creature guess
Which of the glories brightest shone,
Thy justice, or the grace.
Now the full glories of the lamb
Adorn the heavenly throne,
While saints on earth that know His name,
Their Lord and Saviour own.
O God, love’s deep eternal tide (74)
O God, love’s deep eternal tide
Flows rich and full from Thee:
The Father’s heart is opened wide
By Jesus’ blood to me!
It was Thyself, O God, who sought,
With tender yearnings deep,
The loveless soul that sought Thee not
The worthless wandering sheep.
I come, yet leave myself behind,
And thus unfearing come,
For nought save Christ and Thee I find
In my eternal home.
By love’s sweet magnet force led on,
I reach the inmost rest
The nameless rapture of the son
Upon the Father’s breast.
Word of the ever living God! (163)
Word of the ever living God!
Will of His glorious Son!
Without Thee how could earth be trod,
Or heaven itself be known?
Lamp of our feet, whereby we trace
Our path, when wont to stray!
Stream from the Fount of heavenly grace!
Brook by the traveler’s way!
Bread of our souls, whereon we feed!
True manna from on high!
Our guide and chart, wherein we read
Of realms beyond the sky!
Lord, grant us all aright to learn
The wisdom it imparts,
And to its heavenly teaching turn
With simple, child-like hearts!
Bride of the Lamb, awake! awake! (381)
Bride of the Lamb, awake! awake!
Why sleep for sorrow now?
The hope of glory, Christ is thine-
A child of glory thou.
Thy spirit, through the lonely night,
From earthly joy apart,
Hath sighed for one that’s far away-
The Bridegroom of thy heart.
But lo, the night is waning fast,
The breaking morn is near;
And Jesus comes, with voice of love,
Thy drooping heart to cheer.
He comes-for oh! His yearning heart
No more can bear delay-
To scenes of full unmingled joy,
To call His bride away.
This earth, the scene of all His woe-
A homeless wild to thee-
Full soon upon His heavenly throne
Its rightful King shall see.
Thou, too, shalt reign-He will not wear
His crown of joy alone!
And earth His royal Bride shall see
Beside Him on the throne.
Then weep no more! ’tis all thine own-
His crown, His joy divine,
And sweeter far than all beside,
He, He Himself, is thine.
The vail is rent:our souls draw near (4)
The vail is rent: our souls draw near
Unto a throne of grace;
The merits of the Lord appear,
They fill the holy place.
His precious blood has spoken there,
Before and on the throne;
And His own wounds in heaven declare
The atoning work is done.
‘Tis finished! here our souls have rest;
His work can never fail :
By Him, our Sacrifice and Priest,
We pass within the vail.
Within the holiest of all,
Cleansed by His precious blood,
Before the throne we prostrate fall,
And worship thee, O God!
Boldly the heart and voice we raise,
His blood, His name, our plea;
Assured our prayers and songs of praise
Ascend, by Christ, to Thee.
Jesus, Thou lowly hearted Lord (131)
Jesus, Thou lowly hearted Lord,
Ever shall we explore
Fathomless grace whose depths afford
Wonder for evermore!
Fain would Thy heart some grace record,
Kindred to Thine in us:
Grant, then, the mind that led Thee, Lord,
Downward to meet the cross!
Drawn by Thy love’s constraining cord,
Lead us where Thou hast trod,
Making grace triumph in us, Lord,
Savor of Christ to God!
Teach us to find Thy once abhorred,
Lonely and downward path,
Fellowship of Thy sufferings, Lord,
Fashioning to Thy death!
The Spirit breathes upon the word (162)
The Spirit breathes upon the word,
And brings the truth to sight;
Precepts and promises afford
A sanctifying light.
A glory gilds the sacred page,
Majestic, like the sun;
It gives a light to every age-
It gives, but borrows none.
Let everlasting thanks be Thine
For such a bright display,
As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heavenly day.
My soul rejoices to pursue
The steps of Him I love,
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.
‘Tis sweet to think of those at rest (368)
‘Tis sweet to think of those at rest,
Who sleep in Christ the Lord-
Whose spirits now with him are blest,
According to His word.
They once were pilgrims here with us-
In Jesus now they sleep;
And we for them, while resting thus,
As hopeless can not weep.
How bright the resurrection-morn
On all the saints will break!
The Lord Himself will then return,
His ransomed Church to take!
Our Lord Himself we then shall see,
Whose blood for us was shed-
With Him forever we shall be,
Made like our glorious Head!
We cannot linger o’er the tomb:
The resurrection-day
To faith shines bright beyond its gloom,
Christ’s glory to display!
Behold the glories of the Lamb (12)
Behold the glories of the Lamb
Amidst the Father’s throne!
Prepare new honors for His name,
And songs before unknown!
Ye elders, worship at His feet-
His saints adore around,
With vials full of odors sweet,
And harps of sweetest sound!
To Thee, O Lamb, to Thee, once slain,
Be endless blessings paid!
Salvation, glory, joy, remain
Forever on Thy head!
A pilgrim through this lonely world (130)
A pilgrim through this lonely world,
The blessed Saviour passed,
A mourner all His life was He,
A dying Lamb at last.
That tender heart that felt for all,
For all its life blood gave,
It found on earth no resting place,
Save only in the grave.
Such was our Lord-and shall we fear
The cross, with all its scorn?
Or love a faithless, evil world,
That wreathed His brow with thorn?
No! facing all its frowns and smiles,
Like him obedient still,
We homeward press through storm or calm,
To Zion’s blessed hill.
Dead to the world with Him who died,
To win our hearts, our love,
We, risen with our risen Head,
In spirit dwell above.
Father of mercies, in Thy Word (161)
Father of mercies, in Thy Word
What endless glory shines!
Forever be Thy name adored
For these celestial lines.
Here the Redeemer’s welcome voice
Spreads heavenly peace around:
And life, and everlasting joys,
Attend the blissful sound.
Here springs of consolation rise
To cheer the fainting mind;
And thirsty souls receive supplies,
And sweet refreshment find.
Oh, may these heavenly pages be
My ever dear delight;
And still new beauties may I see,
And still increasing light.
Come, let us join our cheerful songs (14)
Come, let us join our cheerful songs,
And thus surround the throne:
Had we ten thousand thousand tongues,
Our theme of joy’s but one-
"Worthy the Lamb that’s gone on high,
To be exalted thus!"
"Worthy the Lamb that died!" we cry,
"For He was slain for us."
Jesus is worthy to receive
Honor and power divine;
Yea, blessings more than we can give
Be, Lord, forever Thine.
Soon shall Thy saints, exalted high,
A glorious anthem raise;
And all that dwell beneath the sky
Speak forth Thine endless praise.
Redeemed creation join in one,
To adore the sacred name
Of Him that sits upon the throne,
And to exalt the Lamb.
For Christ my Lord my spirit longs (126)
For Christ my Lord my spirit longs,
For Christ my Saviour dear,
The joy and sweetness of my songs,
The whilst I wander here!
O Jesus Lord, most fair, most sweet,
In love revealed to me,
For ever keep me at Thy feet,
To sing love’s song to Thee.
I drink with sweet, eternal thirst,
Thy love’s exhaustless tide,
With lips as eager as at first,
Yet ever satisfied!
It is not with uncertain step (152)
It is not with uncertain step
We tread a homeless way:
A well-known Voice has called us up
To everlasting day!
It is the voice of Him who trod
Alone the trackless wild,
And marked the road that leads to God
Each Spirit-quickened child.
Nor leaves He us to find alone
Our path across the waste,
But still with living grace leads on,
As toward our home we haste.
See! open stands the heavenly door,
Whence Glory shines below,
To light the way He trod before-
The bliss that waits, to show!
We bless Him who appoints the road
That-though our faith he tried-
Reveals a Love which bears our load,
Where in our hearts may hide!
Jesus! How much Thy name unfolds (28)
Jesus! How much Thy name unfolds
To every opened ear!
The pardoned sinner’s memory holds
None other half so dear.
Thy name encircles every grace
That God as man could show;
There only could He fully trace
A life divine below.
Jesus it speaks a life of love,
Of sorrows meekly borne;
It tells of sympathy above
Whatever makes us mourn.
Jesus the One who knew no sin,
Made sin to make us just;
Thou gavest Thyself our love to win
Our full confiding trust.
The mention of Thy name shall bow
Our hearts to worship Thee;
The Chiefest of ten thousand Thou,
Whose love has set us free.
Lord, who can pay the mighty debt (112)
Lord, who can pay the mighty debt
Of love so rich as Thine?
Love which surpasseth finding out-
Unspeakable, divine!
Oh, rather give us, daily, more-
More every hour-to see
That, such a bounteous Giver Thou,
We must Thy debtors be!
Knowing Thy way is always best (147)
Knowing Thy way is always best,
However dark it be-
Knowing that we, would we be blessed,
Must ever look to Thee.
May we in all things see Thy hand,
And always bless Thy name,
Submitting to Thy blest command-
Whate’er Thou dost ordain!
We know not what Thou hast in store,
Joy, sorrow, good, or ill-
We only pray that we the more
May trust Thy perfect will.
What grace, O Lord, and beauty shone (29)
What grace, O Lord, and beauty shone
Around Thy steps below!
What patient love was seen in all
Thy life and death of woe!
For ever on Thy burdened heart
A weight of sorrow hung,
Yet no ungentle, murmuring word
Escaped Thy silent tongue.
Thy foes did hate, despise, revile,
Thy friends unfaithful prove;
Unwearied in forgiveness still,
Thy heart could only love!
Jesus! Thou art my hiding place (106)
Jesus! Thou art my hiding place,
From what my sin demands;
I cling to Thine amazing grace,
Thy feet, Thy side, Thy hands.
Jesus! Thou art my hiding place,
In storm and tempest here;
Though weak, I know Thy love’s embrace,
And cast away my fear.
And Thou wilt be my hiding place,
Should death be hovering round:
Thou wilt bestow sufficient grace
To make my hope abound.
Yea, Thou wilt be my hiding place
On the eternal shore;
I shall in glory see Thy face-
Be sheltered evermore.
Father, whate’er of earthly bliss (146)
Father, whate’er of earthly bliss,
Thy sovereign will denies,
Accepted at Thy throne of grace
Let this petition rise:
Give me a calm and thankful heart,
From every murmur free;
The blessing of Thy grace impart,
And let me live to Thee.
Let the sweet thought that Thou art mine
My path of life attend;
Thy presence through my journey shine,
And crown my journey’s end.
O Blessed Savior, Is Thy Love ( 88 )
O blessed Savior, is Thy love
So great, so full, so free?
Fain would we have our thoughts, our hearts,
Our lives engaged with Thee.
We love Thee for the glorious worth
Which in Thyself we see:
We love Thee for that shameful cross,
Endured so patiently.
No man of greater love can boast
Than for His friend to die;
Thou for Thine enemies wast slain!
What love with Thine can vie?
Though in the very form of God,
With heavenly glory crowned,
Thou didst a servant’s form assume,
Beset with sorrow round.
Thou wouldst like wretched man be made
In everything but sin,
That we as like Thee might become
As we unlike had been:
Like Thee in faith, in meekness, love,
In every beauteous grace;
From glory into glory changed,
Till we behold Thy face.
O Lord! we treasure in our souls
The memory of Thy love;
And ever shall Thy name to us
A grateful odor prove.
Our Tongues Shall Spread The Savior’s Fame ( 182 )
Our tongues shall spread the Savior’s fame,
Whose grace we daily prove,
For since our souls have known His name,
His banner has been–Love.
When walking in the paths of sin,
We far from Him did rove,
By sweet constraint He drew us in,
And waved His banner–Love.
He spread the banquet, made us eat,
Bid all our fears remove;
Yea, o’er our guilty, rebel heads
He placed His banner–Love.
When weary of His rich repast,
We’ve sought, alas! to rove,
He has recalled His faithless guest,
And shown His banner–Love.
In every conflict we sustain,
Our enemies shall prove,
Through Him the victory we obtain,
Beneath His banner–Love.
And when He calls us home at length,
To feast with Him above,
Through eternity we’ll sing
His never-changing love.
