According to Thy gracious word (36)

According to Thy gracious word,
In deep humility,
This will I do, my dying Lord,
I will remember Thee.

Thy body, given for my sake,
My bread from heaven shall be;
Thy blood my peace, this cup I take,
And thus remember Thee.

Gethsemane can I forget?
Or there Thy sorrow see,
Thine agony and bloody sweat,
And not remember Thee?

When to the cross I turn mine eyes,
And rest on Calvary,
O Lamb of God, blest Sacrifice,
I must remember Thee!

Remember Thee, and all Thy pains,
And all Thy love to me?
Yea, while a breath, a pulse remains,
I will remember Thee!

"No separation!" O my soul! (104)

"No separation!" O my soul!
‘Tis God who speaks the word;
So close the Spirit thee unites
With Christ, thy risen Lord.

"No separation!" Thou art His,
And His for evermore;
Upon the cross thy debt He paid,
And all thy judgment bore.

"No separation!" Precious word
In it, my soul, be glad;
Loved with an everlasting love,
And one with Jesus made.

"No separation!" Life mor death,
Things present nor to come,
Can part thee from His precious care,
Or rob thee of thy home.
"No separation!" Linked with Him,
His glory-all is thine;
Oh, wondrous love, that thus could plan
A union so divine!

My God, my Father! blissful name! (145)

My God, my Father! blissful name!
I now may call Thee mine-
May now with sweet assurance claim
A portion so divine!

Whate’er Thy providence denies,
I calmly would resign,
For Thou art just, and good, and wise:
Oh, bend my will to Thine!

Whate’er Thy sacred will ordains,
Oh, give me strength to bear,
Teach me to know my Father reigns,
And trust His tender care.

Thy sovereign ways are oft unknown
To my weak, erring sight,
Yet shall my soul adoring own
That all Thy ways are right.

To Calvary, Lord, in spirit now (37)

To Calvary, Lord, in spirit now,
Our waiting souls repair,
To dwell upon thy dying love,
And taste its sweetness there.

Sweet resting-place of every heart
that feels the plague of sin,
Yet knows that deep mysterious joy,
The peace of God within.

There, through Thine hour of deepest woe,
Thy suffering spirit passed;
Grace there its wondrous victory gained,
And love endured its last.

Dear suffering Lamb! Thy bleeding wounds,
With cords of love divine,
Have drawn our willing hearts to Thee,
And linked our life with Thine.

Eternal Circle, holy, bright (96)

Eternal Circle, holy, bright,
Of Godhead bliss above!
Thy wondrous fellowship of Light
Embraces us in love!

O Christ! with Thee, before God’s face,
We share Thy Father’s kiss-
Shall taste for evermore, in grace,
The Son’s unfathomed bliss!

With Thee, O Father! Thrilled, we view
The beauties of Thy Son-
Shall view them ever, ever new,
As ever Thou hast done!

The Spirit’s boundless joy we prove-
For evermore shall gaze
On Father, Son, with His deep love!
With His own power shall praise!

E’en now with joy our souls adore
Thee, Father! Thee, O Son!
What songs the Spirit will outpour
From us when round God’s throne!

O Thou whose bounty fills my cup (136)

O Thou whose bounty fills my cup,
With every blessing meet!
I give Thee thanks for every drop,
The bitter and the sweet.

I praise Thee for the desert road,
And for the river side,
For all thy goodness hath bestowed,
And all thy grace denied.

I thank Thee for both smile and frown,
And for the gain and loss;
I praise Thee for the future crown,
And for the present cross.

I bless Thee for the glad increase,
And for the waning joy,
And for this strange, this settled peace,
Which nothing can destroy.

O what amazing words of grace ( 254 )

O what amazing words of grace
Are in the gospel found!
Suited to ev’ry sinner’s case,
Who knows the joyful sound.

Poor, sinful, thirsty, fainting souls
Are freely welcome here;
Salvation, like a river, rolls
Abundant, free, and clear.

Come, then, with all your wants and wounds,
Your ev’ry burden bring:
Here love, unchanging love, abounds,
A deep, celestial spring.

Whoever will O gracious word!
May of this stream partake:
Come, thirsty soul, and bless the Lord,
And drink, for Jesu’s sake.

Millions of sinners, vile as you,
Have here found life and peace;
Come, then, and prove its virtues too,
And drink, adore, and bless.

O risen Lord, God’s deep delights (54)

O risen Lord, God’s deep delights
Thou dost not taste alone!
In Thee we tread those radiant heights,
And know Thy bliss our own!

We share, in glory far above
This scene that sense can see,
The sweetness of the Father’s love,
In unison with Thee!

By faith we see Thee glory crowned
Ourselves in Thee through grace!
By faith we rest where Thou art throned,
And gaze upon Thy face!

The fullness of Thy joy we share,
Ours now for evermore!
Our need, ourselves, forgotten there,
Thee, Lord, our hearts adore!

One Spirit with Thee, glorious Lord,
Our praise to Thee is sweet
As to Thy heart the love that poured
The ointment on Thy feet!

Jesus! I love Thy charming name (90)

Jesus! I love Thy charming name,
‘Tis music to mine ear;
Fain would I sound it out so loud
That earth and heaven should hear!

Yes, Thou art precious to my soul,
My Transport and my Trust!
Jewels, to Thee, are gaudy toys,
And gold is sordid dust.

All my aspiring powers can wish,
Lord, Thou dost richly meet;
Nor to mine eyes is light so dear,
Nor friendship half so sweet.

Thy grace e’er dwells upon my heart,
And sheds its fragrance there-
The noblest balm for all its wounds,
A cordial for its care.

Behold! behold the Lamb of God (200)

Behold! behold the Lamb of God
On the cross, on the cross;
For us He shed His precious blood
On the cross, on the cross;
Oh! hear His sad heart-rending cry,
"Eli lama sabachthani!"
Draw near and see your Saviour die
One the cross, on the cross.

Behold his arms extended wide,
On the cross, on the cross;
Behold His bleeding hands and side,
On the cross, on the cross;
The sun withholds its rays of light,
The heavens are clothed in shades of night,
While Jesus wins the glorious fight,
On the cross, on the cross.

Come, sinners, see him lifted up
On the cross, on the cross;
He drinks for us the bitter cup,
On the cross, on the cross;
The rocks do rend, the mountains quake
While Jesus doth atonement make,
While Jesus suffers for our sake,
On the cross, on the cross.

Amazing grace how sweet the sound ( 258 )

Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That sav’d a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved:
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed!

‘Thro many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

Yea, though this heart and flesh should fail,
Though mortal life should cease,
I shall possess, within the vail,
A life of joy and peace.

Jesus, Thy head once crowned with thorns (59)

Jesus, Thy head once crowned with thorns,
Is crowned with glory now;
Heavens royal diadem adorns
The mighty Victor’s brow.

Thou glorious Light of courts above,
Joy of the saints below,
To us still manifest Thy love,
That we its depths may know.

To us Thy cross, with all its shame,
With all its grace, be given;
Though earth disowns Thy lowly name,
God honors it in heaven.

Who suffer with Thee, Lord, below,
Shall reign with Thee above;
Then let it be our joy to know
This way of peace and love.

To us Thy cross is life and health,
It was shame and death to Thee,
Our present glory, joy, and wealth,
Our everlasting stay.

There is a name I love to hear (89)

There is a name I love to hear,
I love to sing its worth;
It sounds like music in mine ear-
The sweetest name on earth!

It tells me of a Saviour’s love,
Who died to set me free;
It tells me of His precious blood,-
The sinner’s perfect plea.

Jesus! the name I love so well,
The name I love to hear;
No saint on earth its worth can tell,
No heart conceive how dear.

This Name shall shed its fragrance still
Along the thorny road-
Shall sweetly smooth the rugged hill
That leads me up to God.

And there, with all the blood-bought throng
From sin and sorrow free,
I’ll sing the new eternal song
Of Jesu’s love to me.

Of all the gifts Thy love bestows (191)

Of all the gifts Thy love bestows
Thou Giver of all good!
Not heaven itself a richer knows,
Than the Redeemer’s blood.

Faith, too, that trusts the blood through grace,
From that same love we gain;
Else, sweetly as it suits our case,
The gift had been in vain.

We praise thee, and would praise Thee more;
To Thee our all we owe:
The precious Saviour, and the Power
That makes Him precious too.

Jesus, O name divinely sweet ( 270 )

Jesus! O name divinely sweet!
How soothing is the sound!
What joyful news, what heav’nly pow’r,
In that blest name is found!

Our souls, as guilty and condemned,
In hopeless fetters lay,
Our souls, with countless sins defiled,
Of death and hell the prey.

Jesus, to purge away our guilt,
A willing victim fell,
And on His cross triumphant broke
The bands of death and hell.

How sweet and holy is the place (68)

How sweet and holy is the place
With Christ within the doors,
Where everlasting love displays
The choicest of her stores!

While all our hearts and all our songs
Join to admire the feast,
Each of us cries with thankful tongue,
"Lord! why am I a guest?

"Why was I made to hear Thy voice,
And enter while there’s room,
When thousands make a wretched choice,
And rather starve than come?"

It was the same love that spread the feast,
That sweetly forced us in:
Else we had still refused to taste,
And perished in our sin.

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds (88)

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
‘Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary, rest.

Dear Name! the Rock on which we
Our Shield and Hiding-place!
Our never-failing Treasure, filled
With boundless stores of grace!

Jesus, our Saviour, Shepherd, Friend!
Thou Prophet, Priest and King!
Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End!
Accept the praise we bring.

The lowly Jesus gladly reigns (335)

The lowly Jesus gladly reigns
In trusting children’s souls
Where His sweet law of love constrains,
And grace alone controls.

The blessed light of truth divine
He doth to each impart,
And kindly poureth oil and wine
On every wounded heart.

Jesus, the Lord is full of love:
How tender all His ways!
He hears His children’s prayers above,
He loves their notes of praise.

Through life He guides them by His Word;
If, ere He come, they die,
His hand shall loose the silver cord-
To Him their spirits fly.

Yes, from the gloomy world they rise,
To Jesus borne along,
Until, above the starry skies,
They join the heavenly throng.

All that I was-my sin, my guilt ( 271 )

All that I was-my sin, my guilt,
My death-was all my own;
All that I am, I owe to Thee,
My gracious God, alone!

The darkness of my former state,
The bondage, all was mine;
The light of life, in which I walk,
The liberty, is Thine.

Thy grace first made me feel my sin,
It taught me to believe;
Then, in believing, peace I found,
And now I live, I live!

All that I am, e’en here on earth,
All that I hope to be,
When Jesus comes and glory dawns,
I owe it, Lord, to Thee!

Jesus, the very thought of Thee (87)

Jesus, the very thought of Thee
With sweetness fills my breast;
But sweeter far Thy face to see,
And in Thy presence rest.

No voice can sing, no heart can frame,
Nor can the memory find
A sweeter sound than Thy blest name,
O Saviour of mankind!

O Hope of every contrite heart!
O Joy of all the meek!
To those who fall how kind Thou art!
How good to those who seek!

And those who find Thee, find a bliss
No tongue nor pen can show:
The love of Jesus-what it is,
None but His loved ones know.

Jesus! our only joy be Thou,
As Thou our prize wilt be.
Jesus! be Thou our glory now,
And though eternity.

O Lord, Thy love, more sweet to me (170)

O Lord, Thy love, more sweet to me
Than psaltery and psalm,
My joy in glory soon shall be-
My song, my crown, my palm!

Yet sweet e’en now to see thy Face,
And in Thy love to rest,
All sorrow stilled in Thine embrace,
And soothed upon Thy breast!

Lord, weeping there is deeper joy
Than know the sons of men-
Tasting that Love, without alloy,
We can not lose again!

Our grief is sorrow for an hour-
Eternal is Thy love:
Here we but taste its budding flower,
Which fully blooms above!

Our grief, bereft of all that stings
Through Thy sweet sympathy,
But leaves a broken heart that sings,
O lamb of God, to Thee!

Ye wretched, hungry, starving poor (226)

Ye wretched, hungry, starving poor,
Behold a royal feast,
Where mercy spreads her bounteous store,
Where mercy spreads her bounteous store,
For every humble guest!

See, Jesus stands with open arms;
He calls, He bids you come;
Guilt holds you back, and fear alarms,
Guilt holds you back, and fear alarms,
But see, there yet is room!

Room in the Saviour’s bleeding heart,
Where love and pity meet;
Nor will He bid the soul depart
Nor will He bid the soul depart
That trembles at His feet.

Oh, come, and with His people taste
The blessings of His love,
While hope attends the sweet repast
While hope attends the sweet repast
Of nobler joys above.

There, with united heart and voice,
Before the eternal throne,
Ten thousand thousand souls rejoice
Ten thousand thousand souls rejoice
In ecstasies unknown!

And yet ten thousand thousand more
Are welcome still to come;
Ye longing souls, the grace adore!
Ye longing souls, the grace adore!
Approach, there yet is room!

To heart and soul how fair thou art ( 282 )

To heart and soul how fair Thou art,
O great High Priest of God!
To hearts brought nigh to God’s own heart
By Thy most precious blood.

No more my countless sins shall rise
To fill me with dismay:
That precious blood before God’s eyes
Hath put them all away.

Forgotten ev’ry stain and spot!
Their mem’ry past and gone!
For me, O God, Thou seest not
Thou lookest on Thy Son.

Thy Word, O Lord, which cannot lie,
Thy Spirit, and Thy blood,
Proclaim to sinners, such as I,
The boundless love of God.

They tell Thy love, so deep, so free!
They tell the Father’s heart!
Not what I am, nor yet must be,
They tell me what Thou art!

Come, weary sinners, great and small!
The Door stands open wide
His blessed heart, Who welcomes all;
The Lamb of God who died!

O Lord, the Spring of all my joys (83)

O Lord, the Spring of all my joys,
The life of my delights,
The glory of my brightest days,
And comfort of my nights!

In darkest shades, if Thou appear,
My dawning is begun:
Thou art my soul’s bright Morning Star,
And Thou my rising Sun.

The opened heavens round me shine
With beams of sacred bliss,
When Jesus shows His mercy mine,
And whispers I am His.

My soul would leave this mortal clay
At Thy transporting word-
Caught up with joy the shining way,
To see and praise Thee, Lord.

We thank Thee, Lord, for weary days (169)

We thank Thee, Lord, for weary days
When desert springs were dry,
And first we knew what depth of need
Thy love could satisfy.

Days when beneath the desert sun,
Along the toilsome road,
O’er roughest ways we walked with One
That One the Son of God.

We thank Thee for that rest in Thee
The weary only know,
The perfect, wondrous sympathy
We only learn below:

The sweet companionship of One
Who once the desert trod:
The glorious fellowship with One
Upon the throne of God.

We know Thee as we could not know
Through heaven’s golden years;
We there shall see Thy glorious face-
Here understand Thy tears!

And here in peace, with Thee we go
Where Thou alone once trod,
Still learning through our need below
Depths of the hearts of God.

When wounded sore, the stricken soul (225)

When wounded sore, the stricken soul
Lies bleeding and unbound,
One only hand, a pierced hand,
Can heal the sinner’s wound.

When sorrow swells the laden breast,
And tears of anguish flow,
One only heart, a broken heart,
Can fell the sinner’s woe.

When penitence has wept in vain
Over some foul, dark spot,
One only stream, a stream of blood,
Can wash away the blot.

‘Tis Jesus’ blood that washes white,
His hand that brings relief,
His heart that’s touched with all our joys
And feeleth for our grief.

It is Thy bleeding hand, O Lord,
Unseals that cleansing tide;
We have no shelter from our sin,
But in thy wounded side.

By faith we gaze upon the cross ( 290 )

By faith we gaze upon the cross
Whereon the Saviour died,
Which tells of life giv’n up to save,
Of love by suff’ring tried.

By faith we gaze beyond this scene,
And on the mercy-seat,
Within the vail, we see the blood
Our peace with God complete!

It speaks the glory of Thy work,
O Lord! atonement made:
Our Great High Priest upon the throne,
As Lord and Christ displayed.

By faith we gaze upon Thee there,
Enthroned in glory bright,
Thy thorn-pierced brow with glory crowned
That place Thine own by right.

And ours that place, that peace, that rest;
Thy portion won for us,
Where fullest glory sweetly shines
From Calv’ry’s shameful cross!

O Lord, Thou King most wonderful (82)

O Lord, Thou King most wonderful,
With heavenly glories crowned,
Thou Sweetness most ineffable,
In Whom all joys are found!

When once Thou visitest the heart,
Then truth begins to shine,
Then earthly vanities depart,
Then kindles love divine.

O Lord, Thou Light of all below,
Thou Fount of life and love,
Surpassing all the joys we know,
Or shall know when above

Thee may our tongues forever bless!
Thee may we love alone!
And ever in our lives express
The image of Thine own!

With joy we meditate the grace (168)

With joy we meditate the grace
Of our High Priest above:
His heart is filled with tenderness-
His very name is Love!

Touched with a sympathy within,
He knows our feeble frame-
He knows what sorest trials mean,
For He has felt the same!

He, in the days of feeble flesh,
Poured out His cries and tears,
And now, ascended, feels afresh
What every member bears!

Then boldly let our faith address
The throne of grace and power:
We shall obtain delivering grace
In every needy hour.

Alas! and did my Saviour bleed (213)

Alas! and did my Saviour bleed,
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

Was it for crimes that I have done,
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!
Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in,
When the incarnate Maker died
For man, the creature’s sin!
