God’s holy law, transgressed,
Speaks nothing but despair:
O sinner! thou, with guilt oppressed,
Canst find no comfort there!
Not all thy groans and tears,
Nor works which thou hast done,
Nor vows, nor promises, nor prayers,
Can for one sin atone!
Relief alone is found
In Jesu’s precious blood:
‘Tis this that heals sin’s mortal wound,
And reconciles to God!
