Why do you feel like abandoning the faith when things are not working out?

Question:

Why is it that some people’s faith gets wishy-washy every now and then?  Why do you feel like abandoning the faith when things are not working out for you at the moment?  I know the Bible says that your heart gets harder when you are drawn away and get enticed by your own desires, but how can one’s heart get harder for something else when he or she has been faithful to God for a long time?

Answer:

“And He said to them all, If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). “I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily” (1 Corinthians 15:31).

The Lord’s guidance and warning to believers is that we take up our cross daily and that we die daily.  The life of the believer is one of constant dependence, denial, and putting to death the desires of the flesh.  When we were saved, our flesh (our natural desires) was not changed at all.  Our flesh will always want to have its way…no matter how long we have been saved.  We must “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).
