Most awful sight! on Calvary’s mount (212)

Most awful sight! on Calvary’s mount,
Three crosses stand in bold relief:
There, in the midst, the Saviour dies;
On either side there hangs a thief!
O blessed Saviour, by Thy pain
The sinner reaps eternal gain!

O soul, on those three trees behold
The saved, the Saviour, and the lost:
The story of our ruined world,
The Saviour’s death salvation’s cost!
Heaven’s door in judgment closed to sin,
Whilst faith in Jesus brings us in!

‘Twas sin that nailed those blessed hands,
Those feet, to that accursed cross:
Your sins and mine, O fellow man,
He bore alone, in suffering thus!
Wilt thou, like that poor thief, believe,
Like him. eternal life receive!
